Who uses social media at UW-Madison?

"More than 90 percent of students at UW-Madison rely on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media for communication and information sharing." That's from DoIt's most recent technology use survey. No surprise there.

But what about faculty and staff? The number of social media users is much tinier, but hard to decipher.

23 percent of faculty and staff have tablet computers (such as iPads) , and 39 percent of those are use social media users. 45 percent have mobile (such as iPhones and Blackberries) devices, and 28 percent of those use social media.

You can multiply those percentages for an idea of social media users...and I'll let you do it 'cause I am NOT a statistician. But you can't add them together—what if someone has a mobile device AND an iPad? I have to stop right there.

But...we can say most faculty and staff at UW–Madison do not use social media. At least, as of February 2011 when this survey was done.

To see the survey, click through on your latest UW News email, or see the faculty and staff survey here. It's full of interesting tidbits.
