State can't afford to turn away dollars
In Wisconsin, childhood obesity and poor fitness is a problem of epidemic proportions that is leading to early development of diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. This generation of children has been projected to be the first to have a shorter average life span than their parents.
The likelihood of this tragic legacy should impel us to take action, individually and collectively, to create healthier environments that improve physical fitness. This would be the most important investment we can make in the future health of Wisconsin's children.
Currently, Wisconsin ranks 49th of 50 in funding for public health and preventive services. The new administration's decision to not even continue current levels of support is disgraceful.
Wisconsin cannot afford to turn away these federal dollars. Allowing Wisconsin to apply for federal funding specifically designated to target this problem could save millions of dollars in future health care costs and further strengthen our commitment to the health of our children.
