Though the headline writer missed the memo (as usual), Jen's LTE below used Clearinghouse talking points and framing technical assistance to achieve "Silver Pen" status in the Post Crescent this weekend! Great team work.
Silver Pen letter: State should
spend more on obesity prevention
Wisconsin taxpayers pay federal taxes and deserve the right to benefit from these funds, funds that could be used to provide healthier school lunches, playgrounds, sidewalks so our children can walk to school, and many other health-promoting efforts.
We are ready and willing to step up to the plate to apply passion and ingenuity in our fight against the growing obesity epidemic, but we cannot do it without the support of our state.
That is pretty awesome - her first ever letter too - I didn't even have to edit that much!
ReplyDeleteDid anyone read the comments to this LTE? I went through first two pages. I know where this geographic area stands politically, but it was still shocking to see they were ALL against the message of this letter. The theme is people are responsible for themselves, and we shouldn't spend money on them if they make bad choices. No one seems to think about the health care spending ramifications for the future, but that's nothing new.

ReplyDeletePerfect example of importance of framing. The headline writer activated a detrimental "government spending" frame that completely distracts some people from ingenuity.
